Community Mental Health & Addictions Worker

This in-depth program is taught within a classroom in the Portland Hotel Society Station Street Housing Project, and follows a curriculum created in partnership with industry agencies that are involved in supporting those with addictions and mental health challenges. The classes contain a balanced mix of communications, sociology, psychology, public policy, and pharmacology, including:
- Occupational health/self care – staying healthy, setting boundaries, dealing with vicarious trauma
- Communities and well-being – social inequality, understanding poverty, youth homelessness
- Understanding government resources – national housing strategies, drug policies
- Mental health and psychosocial rehabilitation – life skills mentoring, concurrent disorders
- Pharmacology – basic pharmacology in mental health and substance abuse
Stenberg College will also allow you to receive plenty of real-world experience through job shadowing and integrated observational experiences. Plus, you can participate in a four-week, 160-hour practicum within addictions and mental health facilities.
